Transmission
The transmission's objective is to maximize the engine's efficiency by achieving low fuel consumption. It converts speeds and torques along the drive-train, transporting the power from the engine to the wheels which allows the engine to operate in a range of speeds. The transmission also consists of planetary gear sets which provide different gear ratios.
What can go wrong?
The transmission experiences more wear and tear over time due to the heat and friction produced by the moving components within. The transmission may lose its ability to respond, generating a delay before the gear engages when shifting (if you drive a standard) or if you shift from drive to park with an automatic. A leak may also be apparent within the transmission as the fluid lubricates, cleans and conditions the seals; without it, the engine will seize and stop working.
What can you do?
Watch for anything that appears unusual; if there is a bright red oil leak underneath your vehicle, there may be a fluid leak within the transmission which needs attention before it worsens. If you notice your vehicle shaking, jerking or any grinding sounds, a problem within the gears may be apparent. Always follow the proper maintenance schedule provided by a service advisor to avoid severe damage.
